BERTHOLD cross consists of planar safety annulus, that doesn't have any residual magnetization and inside of which there is a cylinder of mild steel split in 4 sectors. Sectors are separated by non-magnetizable grooves.
The capsule with thin brass bottom is screwed on to the cylinder.

The bottom of the capsule could be moved to the necessary distant from the object under examination by rotation.
